PD 1: The Martian

I went to see the movie adaptation of Andy Weir’s The Martian today, and it was an absolutely wonderful book to movie adaptation. Ridley Scott’s directing was spot on, and Matt Damon’s Watney was perfect. I read the book in preparation for the movie a month ago and have been looking forward to the movie ever since. Despite knowing what was going to happen throughout the entire movie, it was suspenseful, and stressful to watch. My only complaint would be that the loneliness and length of time Watney spends on Mars feels much shorter because of the format, and I wonder if there was some way that could have been better understood in the movie format.

I wanted to start doing some pixel art for two reasons – first, because cross stitch is basically pixel art, the more I try to design for my cross stitch patterns, the more I realize I don’t really know how to create pixel art. Secondly, I backed Retronator’s Pixel Art Academy a while back, and thought hey, maybe I should get started on doing some pixel art before he actually launches the academy. So to start off my Pixel Dailies I decided to do Watney.

I started off with a plain white suit, coloured in the visor, and then added the details. At the last second, I decided to give my little Watney a plant because he is the “greatest botanist on the planet” after all. The suit’s details is based off the movie adaptation, and not the books.

If you haven’t gotten a chance to read the book, or seen the movie yet, I highly, highly recommend you do!
